“Playing small withholds you from living the life you want to live.”
I found this powerful quote while reading You are a Badass, written by Jen Sincero. Although I didn’t find it until towards the end of the book, I think this quote is probably most important takeaway for me. How many times are we living in fear of what other people may think of us that the fear itself is greater than even our greatest visions we have for ourselves? Sincero’s quote is bold, yet 100% truth. When we play small, we are giving fear the authority to take over our lives. Fear is destructive and unrelenting.
Fear Doesn’t Want You to Live the Life You Want to Live
Think about it, when was the last time you did something for you without second-guessing your decision based on how others may or may not perceive it? Are you often suddenly gung-ho about an idea only to find yourself questioning if your idea will even make a difference in someone else’s life? I like to think that I am immune to these inconveniences due to my go-getter attitude but if I am being honest, I struggle with self-doubt and sometimes the thought of what others may think gets in the way of me living so unapologetically bold in my Faith. I always get so amped up about ideas that God brings up in my spirit but a lot of my thoughts and ideas never see fruition because instead, I allow myself to get caught up in self-destructive thoughts.
Let Go of What is Holding You Back
However, I need to learn to let go of these self-destructive thoughts in order to be able to live the life that I want in 2018. With the new year quickly approaching, I thought the above quote would be fitting for how I wanted to start my new year. What I find incredibly cool about 2018 is that not only do we get to start a new year and a new month, we get to start completely over on a Monday. We have a completely new fresh week that is untainted with anything that we may have left in 2017. I want to start my new year off with the mindset of knowing that I am capable of doing anything that I may put my mind to and allow God to handle the outcome. Maybe there are things that you need to let go of before entering in 2018. Maybe you have similar struggles that inhibit you from living the life that you want to live. The point of the new year is not becoming a new you, it is becoming the best version of you that is already deep within you, dying to jump out into existence.
You Are Not Your Past
When we learn to let go of our past, we are giving ourselves the complete authority to walk in freedom and not become prisoners to our past. Understand that your past does not define you and neither do your fears. You can create the future you want to live in, a future that is full of life, courage, and boldness. The only good thing about your past is that it does not alter your future if you simply do not let it. What are you holding onto that you need to let go in order to live the life that you want to live in 2018?
Remember to kick fear in the face this New Year and head bravely into the unknown.
